TO RAISE public awereness on how to defend IT networks, the public are invited to join the first “Cyber Battle: Capture the Flag” competition expected to be held this October 11.

IT Protective Security Services Sdn Bhd (ITPSS) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shamsul Bahri Hj Kamis said, in the press conference held yesterday at their office in Beribi, Gadong, that free registration is officially open for locals and permanent residents aged 30 and below until October 2. ITPSS is the main organiser of the one-day “cyber battle” to be held at the Authority for Info-Communications Technology of Brunei Darussalam building in Anggerek Desa.

Shamsul Bahri said the ten teams – comprised of two or three local members- will be chosen to compete to find and exploit vulnerabilities on designated servers.

The CEO added that the winning team and the runner-up of the competition would represent the sultanate for the Cyber SEA Game in Jakarta, Indonesia in November. ITPSS will provide the training for the two top teams to be sent.

Part of the local competition is to gain points by fixing security holes, defending their flags, solve challenges of network-based attacks, web-based attacks, exploitation, digital forensics and packet analysis.

During the competition, the participants are expected to bring their own gadgets.

Shamsul Bahri emphasised that the competition would educate the participants on how to strengthen and protect their networks. “There will always be vulnerabilities in the web and networks, this will raise the public awareness to protect them by defending IT networks,” he said.

The top three teams from the local competition will receive a cash prize of $300 to $600, along with electronic gadgets, such as: MacBook Air, Chich Smart scooter and GoPro cameras.
